Timothy Martinek is riding on August 2, 2009 at Kansas City.
Hello! This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes in Kansas City, along with hundreds of other Riders across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $4.5 million. This is not the most exotic location that I have gone to for the Ride to Cure, but expenses will be low allowing us to put more money towards a cure!
Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people including my good friend Tom.
There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime! Right now great strides are being made toward a closed loop artificial pancreas. While not a cure it would help prevent the very devastating complications of diabetes until a cure is found. Some of this valuable research is being done right here at the University of Iowa.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Don't let promising research be setback for lack of funding. This will be my sixth Ride to Cure diabetes. I've ridden hundreds of miles and spent countless hours training and fundraising for this cause. Why? Because I know that research being funded by JDRF is going to lead to a longer healthier life for my friend Tom and thousands like him. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
