Becky Machuta is riding on October 16, 2010 at Death Valley.
Hi! This October, I will be taking part in JDRF's Ride to Cure Diabetes in Death Valley, along with hundreds of other Riders across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $4.5 million.
I will be riding to help find a cure for Type 1, or juvenile diabetes. It is a devastating disease that affects millions of people with a large and growing percentage of them children.
A little over four years ago, I knew very little about Juvenile Diabetes. It was not until we met and became good friends with our neighbors, Steve and Katie, did I know the true ramifications of the disease. You see both Katie and her daughter Ellie (one of my daughter, Katelyn's closest friends) have Juvenile Diabetes. I have seen first hand the day to day (hour by hour) issues and difficulties this disease holds: the constant blood sugar checks, carb counting, administering of insulin, and injections, these are the outward concerns, there are also the concerns of what the highs and lows are doing to their bodies.
My husband Chris rode in this ride last year spending 10 + hours on a bike riding over 90 miles in 105 degree heat. I am excited to join him and many others this year. Okay, maybe a little nervous and crazy too. If spending a few hours on a bike in some exxtreme conditions helps to bring about awareness and ultimately an end to the day to day struggles with diabetes by finding a CURE, I say BRING IT ON!!
I ride for Katie, I ride for Ellie and for all those who are waiting and needing a cure!
Please consider donating, no amount is too small, every little bit helps. Together, we can make the cure a reality! Thank you so much!!!
